Does my car support CarPlay widgets? Check in one minute

Updated September 30, 2026

Widgets come with iOS 26 on the iPhone, not with the car — so most vehicles with CarPlay get them. Here's how to be sure about yours.

The short answer

If your car or head unit shows the CarPlay Dashboard (the split screen with the map and small cards), it shows widgets. The car doesn't need a software update; the widgets are drawn by the iPhone.

What you need

  • An iPhone on iOS 26 or later (iPhone 11 and newer).
  • A car or aftermarket head unit with Apple CarPlay — wired or wireless.
  • A widget app installed on the iPhone.

Test it for free in two minutes

  1. Install a widget app — CarMood lets you put one free design in the car without paying, exactly for this test.
  2. Settings → General → CarPlay → your car → Widgets → Add Widgets → add the widget.
  3. Connect to the car and swipe to the Dashboard. If you see the card, you're set.

How many widgets will I see?

It depends on the screen. Wide screens (most cars since about 2019, and 10-inch-plus head units) show three stacks. Standard screens show two, small 7-inch screens one. Each stack can hold up to five widgets you swipe through.

Wireless adapters and aftermarket units

Wireless CarPlay adapters (CarlinKit, Ottocast and similar) simply relay the CarPlay picture, so widgets work through them. Android-based head units that run CarPlay through a built-in adapter work too, but some of them crop the edges of the picture — designs with centered content look best.

Cars that don't get widgets

  • Cars without CarPlay at all — including Tesla and some older models.
  • Head units with very small or unusually shaped screens sometimes hide the Dashboard entirely.
  • iPhones that can't run iOS 26 (iPhone XS and older).
