CarPlay disconnect sound and “arrived home” automation

Updated September 30, 2026

The connect sound is the popular one, but two more automations make the car feel finished: a goodbye sound when you unplug, and a welcome when you roll into your street.

Disconnect sound

  1. Open Shortcuts → Automation → “+”.
  2. Choose CarPlay → Disconnects → Run Immediately, turn off Notify When Run → Next.
  3. New Blank Automation → Add Action → search “CarMood” → “Play disconnected sound” → Done.
  4. Unplug (or walk away from a wireless car) — the sound plays on the iPhone speaker.

Arrived-home sound

This one uses your location. In CarMood, set your home on the map and the size of the zone; the app plays the sound when you enter the zone while connected to CarPlay. You can also do it with a Shortcuts automation: Personal Automation → Arrive → Home → Run Immediately → action “Play arrived home sound”.

Settings that trip people up

  • Run Immediately must be on — otherwise iOS asks for confirmation on the lock screen and the sound never plays.
  • Notify When Run off — or you'll get a notification each time.
  • Location: allow “Always” for the app if you use the home zone, otherwise iOS stops the app before it can play.
  • The disconnect sound plays on the phone, not in the car — the car is already gone at that point.

Ideas that work

  • Connect: an engine start, a movie-style “systems online” or a voice greeting with your name.
  • Disconnect: a soft “see you”, a lock-click, a short jingle.
  • Arrive home: a doorbell, a cheer, or the kids saying “Dad's home”.

Does the sound play if the phone is locked?

Yes. Shortcuts automations run in the background; the first half-second may be slightly delayed on a locked phone, which is normal for iOS.
