How many CarPlay widgets fit your screen (1, 2 or 3)

Updated 30 September 2026

The same iPhone shows three widgets in one car and a single one in another. It's all about the screen — here's how iOS decides and how to make the most of a small one.

How iOS decides

CarPlay lays out the Dashboard from the resolution and aspect ratio the car reports. Wide screens get a map plus three widget stacks side by side; standard screens two; narrow or small screens one stack next to the map. You can't force more — but each stack holds up to five widgets.

Typical results

  • Wide displays (12 inches and up, most premium cars since 2019): three stacks.
  • Standard 8–10 inch screens: two stacks.
  • 7-inch and some portrait screens: one stack.
  • Aftermarket units: depends on the resolution set in the unit, often two.

Make the most of one or two stacks

  1. Put your most important design first — the top widget in the stack is what you see when you connect.
  2. Turn off Smart Rotate and Widget Suggestions in the iPhone's CarPlay widget settings if you want that order to stay fixed.
  3. Stack designs by moment: a clock for the commute, a photo for the weekend, a countdown for the trip — swipe between them.
  4. In CarMood, set the screen size (1, 2 or 3 widgets) so the app only offers the slots your car can show.

Photos and text on small screens

  • One subject in the middle of the photo; avoid small details.
  • Short text — two or three words per line.
  • High contrast: white text on dark backgrounds reads best in daylight.

Can I change the car's resolution?

In a factory system, no. Some aftermarket head units let you pick the CarPlay resolution in their settings — a higher one gives sharper widgets, and occasionally an extra stack.
